The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association is a great resource for us and our customers. When thinking about the warmer days ahead this summer, it’s important to check your accessible vehicles and make sure they are in tip-top shape. NMEDA has a great checklist for wheelchair accessible vehicles.
Keep it Cool
Your vehicle’s coolant levels need to be checked regularly, but especially during the summer. Taking a road trip? Keep an eye on coolant to keep your engine temps normal, and as a precaution, bring extra coolant along during the hot summer.
Heat from your engine plus heat from the summer sun can really do a number on your vehicle. It’s a good idea to have your hoses, gaskets, and other tubing checked regularly for leaks. Leaks can damage your engine by not circulating coolant, oil, and other fluids properly.
You probably think about maintaining your home’s air conditioner in the summer, but what about your car? If you feel like your car isn’t cooling down like it once did, it’s time to seek professional help to get your air conditioner back on the right track.
Check Your Tires
You wouldn’t run around on shoes that didn’t have a sole, so check those tires and keep them rotated and inflated to the proper level. Changes in temperatures can cause the air pressure to change, and because wheelchair accessible vans carry a little more weight, your tires are working harder.
